With the emergence of photo printing over the last decade, consumers now have a new choice to make when buying an inkjet printer. There are two kinds of ink that inkjet printers use; pigment-based and dye-based. The kind of materials you are printing should help you decide which printer ink is best for you.
Water and Fade Resistance
For years, dye-based inks have been the standard when it comes to inkjet printing. Dye-based inks dissolve in water and flow easily. Tiny drops are sprayed onto the paper and absorb, however water can easily damage dye-based prints. Also, the loose molecular structure of dye-based inks makes them more prone to UV damage from sun exposure. Pigment-based inks are not nearly as soluble. They are thicker and settle more deeply into the fibers of paper. They are susceptible to water damage, but can tolerate moisture better than dye-based inks. Additionally, the thickness of pigment-based ink makes prints less prone to sun damage. Therefore, if longevity is important to your printing, pigment inks may be the the best choice. Though in recent years, developments in dye-based ink technology have made them increasingly comparable to pigment-based inks in terms of durability.
Print Quality
Dye-based inks have typically provided a wider array of colors to prints. However, advancements in pigment technology have increased the quality of pigment-based inks to a point where they are comparable in vibrancy to dye-based inks. However, many experts would still suggest that dye-based black inks are ideal for text printing, while pigment-based black inks are better for imaging. In fact, many modern photo printers include pigment black ink cartridges in addition to dye-based ones specifically for this purpose.
Price
Pigment inks and the print heads that dispense them are more expensive to produce. Therefore pigment-based ink cartridges are going to be more expensive. It is therefore important, when shopping for a new printer, to consider what kind of ink it uses, and what suits your printing needs best.
