Silent movies only needed a project that operated at 16 to 18 feet every second, but introducing sound meant projectors had to operate at 24 feet every second.
The "Mazda Lamp", which was introduced in the 1970's, was a 16mm projector most often utilized as a tubular lamp. These lamps were large -- close to 6 inches tall -- and usually about 750 watts. Succeeding these lamps were new, tungsten-halogen lamps which were much more efficient and even became the standard after some time. With Tungsten lamps, you could have just a 250 watt lamp, and it would easily be brighter than a tubular lamp that was 750 watts. As for the reel size, the 16mm projectors can hold anywhere from 2000 feet to large 600 foot reels, which are often used by professionals.
With the invention of the internet and eBay it is a piece of cake to find that cheap, efficient 16m Projector. Before the Internet was initiated in the 1990's, finding 16mm projectors to play your old reels was a hard thing to accomplish. Most people went to second hand stores, flea markets and yard sales hoping to find a used projector; it was also difficult to find parts. It appeared as if this unique way to watch movies was dead and gone, except for die-hard enthusiasts and collectors. EBay now allows for people to buy and sell their 16mm projectors with ease and anyone can be a collector. All of the 16mm projectors in basements, attics, and garages were now for sale, and most of them were in good to new condition. Even with the internet 16mm projectors are still collector's items and the demand has risen for people who just found those old home movies in the attic.
